This is the reason why sudden death is increasing in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of people aged 40 and under in Malaysia who experience Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS), especially as a result of heart attacks and strokes, is increasing.

Founder of Heart Bit E-ECP Wellness Centre, Dr S. Denesh said this may be due to a shock to the cardiovascular system, resulting from a sudden increase in physical activity after not doing it for a long period during the movement control order when the country was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Physical exercise activity among our population at that time was very low. When the order was lifted, many of us were too quick and aggressive to exercise, causing SADS cases to increase.

"When you don't do exercise for such a long period of time, it will cause a bit of a shock to the body (if someone suddenly does intensive exercise)," he said in Bernama TV's Apa Khabar Malaysia program on Friday (Jan 5).

Dr Denesh also said that high stress levels, insufficient sleep and a history of heart disease also contribute to the occurrence of SADS.

He said the symptoms of SADS and heart attacks are difficult to recognize because they happen so quickly.

Therefore, preventive measures such as lifestyle and diet modification should be done.

"We should also learn how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) because it can increase the rate of arrest for those who have a heart attack. It is important that we identify the symptoms and perform CPR immediately if a person is not breathing," he added.
