Moon sighted, Muslim community to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr today

Marking the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, Muslims across Goa will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Tuesday. The festival is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The celebration commemorates the end of the 30 days of dawn-to-dusk fasting that Muslims observe throughout the holy month of Ramadan. The All Goa Hilaal Committee had met at Verna on May 1 under the aegis of the Association of All Goa Muslim Jamaats for the moon sighting.

However, since the crescent was not sighted, the committee members decided upon May 2 not being the date for Eid-ul-Fitr. On the late evening of May 2 however, the crescent moon was sighted. As per the sighting, May 3 marks the date of the celebration. Reports of moon sighting have also come in from other states declaring the festival date for Tuesday.Usually, the crescent moon of on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr is first sighted in Saudi Arabia

UAE and some parts of Western and Gulf countries. Then usually a day later in the rest of India, and other South Asian countries. The Muslims in Arab states therefore celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday May 2.
