The Johor government and the state are on standby with warnings of bad weather and high tides
JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor government and the state Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) are on standby with the provision of pumps in each district involved following warnings of bad weather and high tides.
Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said high tides were predicted to occur and be concentrated in the Johor Bahru area starting today (12 Jan) until next Wednesday.
"The high tide is expected to be the highest on Sunday and Monday which is 3.7 meters at the Johor Bahru station.
"Therefore, I call and remind all the Johor people to remain vigilant and listen to the instructions of the authorities and always be prepared to face floods for the safety of themselves and their families," he said in a post on his official Facebook page today.
At the same time, Encik Onn Hafiz also reminded the people of the state to be vigilant following the Johor Meteorological Office (MET Johor) issuing a forecast of continuous heavy rain in several districts.
"I have received a report from MET Johor that the heavy rain continues at a bad level until Jan 14 (Sunday) involving Segamat, Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi districts.
"Continuous rain warnings at alert level are predicted to occur in Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat, Pontian, Kulai and Johor Bahru. May God ease all matters and protect us all from all disasters," he added.
As of 11.00 this morning, the total number of flood victims in Johor is 4,650 people who have been accommodated
